Oak Street Decorates for Halloween

It Looks Like Halloween on Oak Street

It seems the residents like to decorate with ghosts and gravestones and some bits of blood-like substances. Here's one example.

Those on  the sidewalk get a hint of what they will find in this yard because it starts on the sidewalk. Of course, you have to look up before you look down. Little tricker or treaters better watch out. I'm wondering if they will also hear spooky music.

This yard is a bit tamer and exhibits a slightly friendlier looking cemetery. At least the jack o lanterns are smiling!

Ghosts and their Friends Who Lurk to Scare Visitors On Halloween

What Haunts These Yards?

This is the time of year I'm glad I walk to the neighborhood mailbox during daylight. All the ghosts and other scary things I pass on the way are less intimidating in the light. I will show you some of them. By the time I walk home the sun is slowly fading. Below you see the ghosts who live across the street from me.

As you can see above, trees seem to attract a lot of ghosts. Even tiny ones. I never would have found this one had I not been trying to take pictures of the fruits of the sycamore tree. There's one of those right behind the ghost's head.

These ghosts are ready to scare little treat-or-treaters from the air.

Scared yet? I didn't think so. If you want to get scared, read this book by my friend Lori Moore. She tells some very chilling ghost stories in this book. Just right to read on a dark night in a haunted house. Or any night when you don't mind a few shivers down your spine. You can even read the Kindle verson in the dark.

Get yourself some spooky classical music to listen to while you read. Or just get it to play while the spooks approach your home on Halloween.

Witches, Etc.

I guess you can't have a Halloween night without a few witches flying around or hanging on trees, like this one. And one also would expect to see Jack-o-Lanterns and skeletons on the scene. Most of the grave that have sprung up in front yards aren't on my block. Thank goodness! They remind me I'm getting old.

Enjoy your Halloween, and be safe. Don't let the ghosts or anything else spoil your evening. And don't eat all the candy your kids bring home.

Have You Voted for Your Favorite Scarecrow Yet?

There's More than One Voting Decision to Make Soon in Paso Robles

The deadline to vote for your favorite downtown scarecrow is October 28. Walk around downtown, look at all of them, and when you find the one you like best, go inside the sponsoring business and vote. You just might win a prize. Prize-winning voters and the winning scarecrow entry will be announced at the big Safe and Fun Halloween Party in the park on October 31. Get more details on both contest and party here.

Do you know who is under the ghost costume in this photo? If you do, please put your answer in the comments. For a hint, consider the location. If you frequent the businesses by the park you will know the identity.

Some of My Favorite Scarecrows

I got downtown to look around after most stores had closed and I didn't have a map. Here's what I found as I walked around near the park.

This is a closer look at the fellow next to the ghost. I wanted you to see his sign.

I tend to like book-themed characters and costumes, so I was immediately drawn to this scarecrow version of the Cat in the Hat.

His costume is similar to the one below.

Here's one with a pumpkin head.

Here's my last scarecrow  photo. I wish I'd picked up a guide, but I hadn't thought to do that. I did see one scarecrow hidden after the business sponsoring it had closed, but not enough of it was visible to photograph it. My advice is to go look for scarecrows during late morning or early afternoon.  For best results, pick up a guide first at the Paso Robles Main Street Office in the alley between 12th and 13th Streets. Look for the Norma's Way sign.

Which of these might you vote for?

The Most Popular Posts for Each Month of 2015

Since I began this blog on February 1, 2015, it's been fun to watch it grow. Sometimes I'm amazed to see which posts were viewed most. I have no idea when I begin a post which topic most people are interested in. I post my daily photo or photos about the people, places, artwork, animals, vineyards, gardens, and even the sky with a few comments or observations and hope they will bring a new perspective on something ordinary or introduce something new to my readers. Here are the most read posts for each month since the blog began in February. Most have more than one photo.

Tips for a Happy and Safe Halloween

A Decorated House that Welcomes Rather than Scares Children

This is my personal favorite of all the Halloween decorations I photographed in 2012. It's friendlier than it is scary, and welcoming rather than intimidating. All decorated houses, though, are sure to welcome costumed children looking for treats.

Safety Tips for Treat-or-Treaters

If your children are in preschool, or the early grades, be sure they go out with a parent or other adult you trust.  Older children should trick-or-treat with a group of three or more. Remind all children to leave unwrapped treats alone until you've checked them for safety. Make sure children have lights to be visible to cars. Remind them to cross safely at corners as they would at other times. Warn them not to go inside houses unless they know the inhabitants well, and then not alone. Costumes should not impede movement or make it harder to see.

With that I shall wish you a happy Halloween, however you choose to spend it. Be safe, don't get sick on too much candy, and make sure your teens aren't out there begging without costumes.

Remember that houses without porch lights on may have good reasons for not welcoming treat-or-treaters. Some folks may be sick or be old and living alone, a bit afraid to open the door when they aren't sure it's an innocent young child ringing the bell. Be kind and kindness will come back to you.
