Red Roses Brighten Our Neighborhood

Many of my neighbors' and my own roses have stopped blooming now. But as I took my photo walk yesterday, I found these red roses still thriving. I think the green of the juniper helps to really show them off. I also thought about what a great Christmas card photo these roses would make. Does anyone still send Christmas cards?

Now we will draw closer to the big picture. First, a single bush.

And now a single group of red roses from one of the bushes.

All that's missing here is the fragrance.

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." (William Shakespeare)

Here are some ideas for bringing lasting red roses into your home to brighten it up. One of these red rose pillows would also make a great wedding, shower, or housewarming gift.

The Sensual Bearded Iris

The Bearded Iris Is a Sensual Flower

Many flowers are beautiful or glamorous, but I can't think of one that is as sensual as the bearded iris. The City Daily Photo Bloggers theme this month is sensual so I will feature my photos of the bearded iris. This is also Day 1 of the October Ultimate Blog Challenge, and I've decided to participate.

The Sensual Bearded Iris

How Can an Iris Be Sensual?

To be sensual, something needs to appeal to the physical senses. There can also be an element of sexuality in something sensual, but there doesn't have to be. I think irises have it all. Bearded irises have a delightful fragrance. They come in an array of colors. Their texture is smooth and silky. Their beards tickle when you touch them.

I decided to show off some of my irises on T-shirts. Click through on any of the shirts to see the other styles and colors you can choose. I added the shoe that someone else designed because I thought it was beautiful.

Modesty Enhances Sensuality

Like a beautiful but flirtatious woman, the iris leaves much to the imagination. You don't see all of an isis at once. It actually emerges from a rather ugly bud that looks a bit like a distorted onion. It would be hard to imagine by looking at the bud how sensual the flower might be.

The Sensual Bearded Iris

Would you guess it would look like this? Yet even with its flags unfurled, it does not reveal its golden center. The spider is looking for it. If you don't see the spider moving when the video starts, just click through to YouTube.

In the photo below it appears the spider found what it was looking for. Look closely in the center. The spider is storming the inner sanctum of the iris in search of the pollinating insects which are attracted to it.

The Sensual Bearded Iris

Below you can see an insect that will soon be trying to pollinate the iris it has chosen.

The Sensual Bearded Iris

Notice how modest the iris is as she keeps her private parts covered until she is ready to show them off.  Only the pollinating insects and their predators are allowed in under her folded petals.

Next time you see a bearded iris, touch it, smell it, and feast your eyes on all it reveals. It may be more sensual than you gave it credit for.

The Sensual Bearded Iris: Many flowers are beautiful or glamorous, but I can't think of one that is as sensual as the bearded iris. Let me show you why.

What do you like best about the iris?

Almost Wordless Wednesday: The First Week of Spring

Floral Signs

Not only is every flowering tree in bloom or dropping its petals, but other flowers are showing their faces. This is one I saw near my mailbox.

For some reason, I treasure this gazania which sprouted in what's left of my lawn. I won't let the gardener touch it when he mows. I hope it spreads.

A New Crop of Weeds Mingles with Flowers

This iris flower has faded, but its neighbor irises are all budding, so I expect more soon. How fast this flower disappeared, and how quickly new buds appeared. I took this photo five days ago. Today the gardener whacked the tops off these grassy weeds that surround this iris bed. If you look very carefully, you can see the new buds. They are bigger today.

Elusive Sunsets with Clouds and No Rain

Beautiful Sunsets are Elusive Now

Now that we've had no rain for a while, beautiful sunsets inland are getting harder to find. I look at the sky in the late afternoon, see clouds, and get hopeful. By the time the sun starts to set, the clouds have disappeared. So I wait for these elusive sunsets most days, only to be disappointed when there aren't any clouds to make them unique and add color to the sky. Tuesday night I got lucky. The clouds decided to hang around until sundown.

Flowers Want Rain Clouds to Deliver More Water

My flowers, however, miss the rain. They begin to droop or look tired when they are dependent on the little water I can give them.  At least the hollyhocks are blooming, but the carnations are fading fast. I hope the purple hyssop will have more abundant flowers in June, when it is normally at its showiest.

The clary sage on the right edge in the middle is producing large buds, so it's on schedule to be in bloom in June. I need to cut back those oregano spikes at the back before they bloom, so I can dry them for cooking. The irises have finished blooming now, but these that get the most water are busy preparing for next year's growth. We need more rain before summer starts.

Still Hoping for Storm Clouds to Deliver another Rain

If you also hope for more beautiful sunsets and rain, please post this to Pinterest. If you'd like to comment, please use the comment box that appears under the sharing buttons at the end of this post.

Earth Laughs in Flowers

Earth Laughs in Flowers
Most of us have read the Emerson quote, "Earth laughs in flowers." Many people  may associate it with the coming of spring. I confess it certainly expresses what I feel when barren vines, trees, and shrubs suddenly burst into bloom, the irises and other bulbs emerge, and ground that was empty becomes alive with new seedlings that soon flower. When the earth seems almost dead, it suddenly explodes into a mass of color below our feet and above our heads.

"Earth laughs in flowers" is just part of the poem "Hamatreya" by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Here is the quote in context, although there is a similar theme in the rest of the poem I've not quoted.

Bulkeley, Hunt, Willard, Hosmer, Meriam, Flint,
Possessed the land which rendered to their toil
Hay, corn, roots, hemp, flax, apples, wool, and wood.
Each of these landlords walked amidst his farm,
Saying, “’Tis mine, my children’s and my name’s.
How sweet the west wind sounds in my own trees!
How graceful climb those shadows on my hill!
I fancy these pure waters and the flags
Know me, as does my dog: we sympathize;
And, I affirm, my actions smack of the soil.”

Where are these men? Asleep beneath their grounds:
And strangers, fond as they, their furrows plough.
Earth laughs in flowers, to see her boastful boys
Earth-proud, proud of the earth which is not theirs;
Who steer the plough, but cannot steer their feet
Clear of the grave.

Earth Laughs in Flowers

As Karen Joslin states in her blog post on this poem, the quote is often taken out of context. It is not a joyous tribute to spring, but rather a statement of man's arrogance in thinking he is dominant over nature. I would prefer to say that although God gave humankind dominion over the earth in the sense of using it and caring for it, humans do not outlast the earth. As the Bible states, they came from the earth and will return to it, and no man can prevent that.

Vicki Lane states in her blog on this quote that perhaps the flowers we see at funerals are "earth's last laugh."  I prefer to think flowers are God's gifts to make our sojourn here more pleasant or to reward those who worked hard to plant and care for them. The flowers in these photos were taken of my neighbor's side yard. It's beside the mailbox when I go to get my mail. I have seen her working hard to care for her plants year round. I'm sure she must feel rewarded for that work as she sees the results now. The photo above showed one of my favorite parts of this garden by the sidewalk. The one below covers more of the garden in less detail.

Earth Laughs in Flowers

The orange flowers are poppies, the purple are iceplant. As far as I can tell, the masses of flowers on the fence are roses or rose relatives. The pale yellow ones smell like roses but they are in small clumps of several small flowers. I put a closer look at just those flowers below. The white ones spilling over the fence are definitely roses.

Earth Laughs in Flowers

What do you think? Are flowers meant as joy for our journey, a reward for our gardening labors, or "earth's last laugh"?

I have put many of my flower photos on blank greeting cards you can see in this Zazzle floral card collection. One of the cards shows a scene from the garden in the photos above.

Here is a sampling of products that use the quote: "Earth laughs in flowers." most designs have been placed on many different products which you will see if you click through.
